Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test
Who: The Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test (GMRT) is designed for students from Pre-K to adults.
What: The GMRT measures the general level of student reading achievement.
When: This assessment is designed to be assessed in the fall and spring of each year, beginning with the spring of kindergarten.
Why: This assessment provides information about the students' reading abilities. The reults from the assessment can be used to organize students into appropriate instructional groups, selecting students who need further diagnosis, identify students who need special instruction, evaulate the effectiveness of instructional programs, and report student progress.
How: This assessment was intended as a group adminstered assessment, but can also be used individually. The assessment is made up of two components, vocabulary and comprehension. The vocabulary section is to be given first. The students are to be given a break before moving to the comprehension section of the assessment. Each student is to be given a testing booklet. The teacher will use the Directions for Administration manual to read the instructions to the students. At the end of the assessment, the teacher is to use the Manual for Scoring and Interpretation to score and analyze the results.
