Observation Survey

Who: This assessment is designed for children up to eight years of age.

 

What: The Observation survey is made up of systematic observation procedures of young children's responses to classroom reading and writing in the first years of school.

 

When: This assessment can be conducted as needed. It is especially useful when used at the introduction of new areas of learning and when the activity being learned is complex.

 

Why: This assessment provides information about the students' abilities, such as intelligence, language skills, auditory and visual perceptions, and etc. This allows teachers to prepare instruction according to each student's needs.

 

How: There are a variety of observation tasks used to assess students, such as letter identification, concepts of print, word tests, writing, and etc. Using the observation manual, the teacher is to prepare the materials. Before giving the assessment, the teacher is to explain the directions to the student and provide them with any materials they need. The teacher will then obsere the student during the assessent process and record all observations. The observation survey anual provides specific observations the teacher is to notice during the assessment process. For example, in the writing task, the teacher is to observe the student's language level, message quality, and directional principles. Once the student has completed the assessment, the teacher is to use the noprovided to guide in the interpretation of the results.
