The history of reading instruction is divided into three ers, the Agricultrual Era, the Industrial Era, and the Technological Era. During each era, reading instruction was based on society's values and the events that were occuring at the time. In order to understand what the future of reading instruction will hold, we must first understand the history of reading instruction. Like most things that happen in the educational world, reading instruction comes full circle and reverts back to previous practices that have been modified to suit the needs of the current time.
