Reading is a complex task made up of many skills and processes. Proficient readers use a variety of strategies to help them make meaning of a text; however there are many readers that do not naturally develop these skills and processes on their own. Effective teachers are knowledgeable about a variety of reading strategies and provide explicit reading instruction to model and explain these reading strategies.
