Peabody Picture Vocabulary

Who: This assessment is designed for children and adults from ages 2 years, 6 months to 90 years and older.
What: The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT-4) measures a chld's understanding of the spoken word in standard American English and thus assesses vocabulary acquisition.
When: This assessment can be conducted at any time to determine reason behind the lack of vocabulary.
Why: This assessment measures students' response to vocabulary instruction, aids in the diagnosis of reading difficulties and designing instructional interventions, and screens for verbal development.
How: The PPVT-4 is to be administed individually. The assessment is untimed, but it takes an average of 10-20 minutes to complete. The examiner will need the PPVT-4 testing booklet, scoring sheet, and norm reference. The examiner will determine the child's chronological age and begin the assessment at or below the child's age. The examiner will show the child a page with four pictures. The child will say a word, and the child will choose the picture that best illustrates the word's meaning. The examiner will record all of the responses. At the end of the assessment, when the child misses more than eight words in one set, the examiner will analyze the scorese and compare them to the norms given.
