Phonics

Who: Phonics should be assessed on all children in grades K-2 and any children with reading difficulties.

What: A phonics assessment will provide information about a chld's knowledge of sound-symbol associations, ability to blend sounds, and knowledge of structural analysis.

When: For students in grades K-2, it should be conducted three times a year and then also as needed.

Why: this assessment identifies chldren who demonstrate weakness in phonics and the different subcontents of phonics, such as consonants, vowels, blends, digraphs, and etc.

How: The teacher will develop questions that asses the different components of phonics. The teacher can also use an assessment that has already been prepared. The teacher will introduce each subtest on the phonics assessment to the student by reading the directions given. The student will have a copy of the assessment, such as the different letter/sound cominations. The teacher will use the examiner's copy of the assessment to mark the student's response: whether the questions were answered correctly, incorrectly, or not attempted.
