Spelling Inventory
Who: This assessment is designed for students in grades K-12, with different spelling inventories for different grade ranges.
What: Spelling inventories are a list of words that have been specially chosen to represent a variety of spelling features at increasing levels of difficulties.
When: This assessment can be conducted as needed.
Why: This assessment provides a general picture of a student's orthographic development.
How: Before giving the spelling inventory, the teacher is to explain this is not a spelling test that will be graded, but to do their best because this test will help the teacher better understand how the students are learning to read and write. The teacher will then give the students blank lined paper. The students are to number their paper according to the number of words in the inventory. Once all students are ready, the teacher is to call out the words one by one, pronouncing each word naturally. After calling out each word twice and providing a sentence for context, the teacher will take up the papers and analyze the results. To analyze the results, the teacher will analyze the orthographic features outlined by the features guides. After marking the features the student got correct or incorrect, the teacher will determine each student's raw score and feature points.
