Psychology and Pedagogy of Reading
1908
Edmund Burke Huey wrote the Psychology and Pedagogy of Reading. This is considered the first professional book written for teachers. In this text, Huey was able to connect reading to science and science to reading. Huey observed and recorded eye movements during reading. He discovered that our eyes, rather than running smoothly over a text, pause and fixate throughout the text. The Psychology and Pedagogy of Reading also offers information about the history of reading and writing and the developmental stages a child goes through in learning these skills. The information presented in the Psychology and Pedagogy of Reading is still relevant in today’s society.
