Schema Theory
1979
The term “schema” was first introduced in psychology by Piaget in 1926. Frederick Bartlett later introduced the term into education. It became a more relevant theory for reading instruction in the late 1970s and early 80s. As it relates to reading, schema refers to an “active process of constructing meaning by connecting old knowledge with new information encountered in text.” We can incorporate what we are reading or learning within an existing framework or system or create a new “schema” if the new information does not fit with what we have previously learned or experienced.
